Explore Square End Mills

MSU’s Square End Mills catalog range covers 12 families or product groups and 279 catalog codes. A catalog code identifies a catalog configuration; current availability is confirmed during quotation.

Square end mills, also called flat end mills, have a flat cutting end. Micro square end mills, roughing end mills and T-slot end mills are separate product groups with different dimensions or cutting geometries.

Start with the family’s catalog scope, then verify the exact model row. A series name does not by itself confirm the required diameter, cutting length, shank, overall length or ordering configuration.

Review Application Inputs

Choose Square End Mills for Your Application

Choose a candidate in two steps: identify the catalog family, then check the exact tool against the operation and machine. Use the End Mill Selection Guide to review geometry, workpiece material and setup. Provide the following inputs together:

  • Workpiece material, grade and hardness when known.
  • Operation, such as slotting, side milling, profiling or flat-bottom machining.
  • Tool diameter, cutting length, reach, shank diameter and overall-length constraints.
  • Required flute count and any coating requirement already specified by the process.
  • Machine, spindle interface, holder, coolant method and setup constraints.
  • Quantity, destination country and target date.

Related geometries

A square end mill provides a flat end geometry. If the part instead requires a continuous spherical cutting profile, use the Ball Nose End Mills route. If it requires a flat end with a defined tool corner radius, use Corner Radius End Mills.

Custom review

If a required geometry or dimensional combination is not confirmed in the catalog, submit it through Custom Cutting Tools for feasibility review. Review does not guarantee that every geometry, tolerance, substrate or coating combination can be manufactured.

Send the workpiece, operation, dimensions and quantity together for a catalog or custom feasibility review.

Square End Mill Selection Questions

Both terms describe a flat cutting end. The MSU Square End Mills range consists of non-micro carbide tools; confirm exact geometry and dimensions from the selected catalog row.

A square end mill has a flat cutting end. A ball nose end mill has a continuous spherical cutting profile. A corner radius end mill retains a flat end and adds a defined radius at the tool corner.

Do not select by flute count alone. The catalog range includes 2-flute, 3-flute and 4-flute families, but the choice must also account for the workpiece, operation, tool diameter, cutting length, machine, holder and coolant.

Use GP, GPP or HPX for the published steel and pre-hardened-steel route, MH for hardened steel, MSM for stainless steel or titanium, MA/MAU/MA-plus for aluminum, and MPS4 for the stated mold-base and mold-frame side-milling scope. Confirm the exact grade, hardness and operation before selection.
