Single-Form Thread Mills

Use Single-Form Thread Mills when the application requires a single-form tool. Confirm the complete thread designation, internal or external condition, hole type and required reach.

Temporary visual for Multi-Form Thread Mills

Multi-Form Thread Mills

Use Multi-Form Thread Mills to review multi-form or full-thread structures. Confirm the required standard, nominal size, pitch or TPI, thread length and available clearance.

Temporary visual for Pipe Thread Mills

Pipe Thread Mills

Use Pipe Thread Mills for BSP(G), BSPT(Rc), NPT or NPTF applications. Confirm the complete pipe-thread designation, nominal size, pitch or TPI, internal or external condition and hole depth.

Temporary visual for Combination Drill & Thread Mills

Combination Drill & Thread Mills

Use Combination Drill & Thread Mills when drilling and thread milling need to be reviewed together. Confirm the hole type and depth, coolant, machine control and operation sequence.

Compare the four product types by form, standard, pitch, thread position, hole type and reach.

Start with the tool structure, then verify the exact thread standard and dimensions in the relevant product table. Catalog listings do not indicate real-time stock.

For accurate selection, specify whether the thread is internal or external, whether the hole is blind or through, the pitch or TPI, and the required reach. Terms such as “metric” or “pipe thread” alone do not provide enough detail.

Product type Use this product type when Required confirmation
Single-form A single-form thread mill structure Standard, profile, nominal size, pitch or TPI, internal or external thread and reach
Multi-form A multi-form or full-thread structure Standard, profile coverage, nominal size, pitch or TPI, thread length and clearance
Pipe thread A pipe-thread requirement BSP(G), BSPT(Rc), NPT or NPTF designation, nominal size, pitch or TPI, internal or external condition and hole depth
Combination drill & thread A tool that combines drilling and thread milling Thread designation, hole type and depth, machine control, coolant and operation sequence

Choose Thread Mills for Your Application

A thread mill request should identify both the thread specification and the machining context.

  • Complete thread standard and designation.
  • Nominal size and pitch or TPI.
  • Internal or external thread.
  • Through or blind hole, pre-hole condition and required thread depth or reach.
  • Workpiece material, grade and hardness when known.
  • Machine and control, holder, coolant method and relevant programming constraints.
  • Quantity, destination country and target date.

Catalog diagrams may illustrate single-tooth, three-tooth and full-thread milling sequences. These diagrams explain tool structures; programming, coolant and operating conditions must still be reviewed for the selected product and machine.

When the required geometry is not listed, submit the drawing and technical file through Custom Cutting Tools for feasibility review. Availability, tolerance, material, coating, sample and batch conditions are confirmed for each project.

Send the standard, size, pitch or TPI, workpiece and quantity together for product review.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Review MSU manufacturing facilities, inspection processes and the product information used to confirm a thread mill requirement.

Thread Mills are manufactured by MSU. The available range covers four product types, multiple thread systems and model-specific dimensions.

See the MSU Factory page for manufacturing facilities and Quality Control for inspection processes. Product dimensions, inspection requirements and acceptance conditions are confirmed using the selected model, order details or approved custom drawing.

Factory photos show MSU’s manufacturing facilities. Runout, accuracy, tool life and machining results depend on the selected product and operating conditions.

Thread Mills Questions

What information is required to select a thread mill?

Provide the standard, full thread designation, nominal size, pitch or TPI, internal or external condition, hole type and depth, workpiece, machine control and quantity.

Which thread systems appear in the current catalog?

The product groups include Metric/ISO, UNC, UNF, UNS, UNEF, 55-degree inch, trapezoidal, ACME, PG, BSP(G), BSPT(Rc), NPT and NPTF coverage. Each product group has its own range.

Does every thread mill structure cover every standard?

No. Standard coverage varies by product group and dimensional table. Verify the exact combination before selection or quotation.

Can the same product be used for internal and external threads?

Do not assume this from the category name. State the internal or external condition in the inquiry and confirm it against the exact product specification.

Does MSU review custom thread mills?

Yes. MSU accepts drawings and technical files for custom-tool feasibility review. Tolerance, material, coating, sample and batch conditions are confirmed for each project.

What is the order-completion period?

Completion of the whole order is guaranteed within 25–30 days from order placement.
